Timing

Timing is Everything

This article discusses the importance of timing and planning in change management (CM) through the lens of the CM Baseline. It emphasizes the creation of an Implementation Plan based on the Impact Matrix and change dependencies, highlighting the need for accuracy and adaptability in both traditional and Agile project management methodologies.

Dependencies

Dependencies limit the possible sequences of events

This article continues the CM Baseline series by discussing ‘Change Dependencies,’ the third component. It outlines the types of dependencies—logical, preferential, and resource—that affect the sequence of implementing changes. Understanding these dependencies aids project management by providing a clear roadmap for navigating the implementation phase and optimizing change processes.

Intentions are the desire for new Stories

The article discusses managing changes in the CM Baseline series using analogies related to flights. It introduces the Impact Matrix as a critical component that captures the intentions behind changes, detailing affected objects and relationships. The post emphasizes the significance of effective visualization and analysis for collaborative decision-making in change management.

Connections tell the Story

The post discusses the challenges of managing changes and dependencies in configurations, introducing the CM2 Baseline as a solution. This baseline integrates communication through a Business Object Graph, highlighting the importance of connections for impact analysis. It emphasizes real-time data sharing while maintaining the integrity of expert domain tools.

A discussion about The Future of CM

Just before the end of 2021 Jos Voskuil a.k.a. the Virtual Dutchman organized a discussion about the Future of Configuration Management with Lisa Fenwick from CMstat, Maxime Gravel from Moog and myself.

Understanding the Impact of Changes

The post discusses the challenges of managing complex product development without effective systems, comparing it to a lack of air traffic control leading to crashes. It introduces CM2’s Baseline solution for managing planned changes and their impacts but notes integration difficulties across different systems. Effective change management and dependency tracking are essential for timely product development.

Next Disruption Please…

This blog post discusses the impact of Model-Based Initiatives on Configuration Management (CM), highlighting challenges faced during the transition from paper to digital processes. It explores the historical evolution of CM, the need for adaptability in changing environments, and the importance of data management and collaboration in ensuring effective change processes within organizations.

What comes to mind when you think about Configuration Management?

On September 9, 2021, I conducted a full day of lectures on Configuration Management at Avans University, attracting over 30 students. The day included the creation of Word Clouds to gauge insights, discussions on key topics, and engaging exercises with LEGO bricks. The initiative has reached over 100 students, promoting awareness in Configuration Management.

Ignorance is Bliss! (till it isn’t)

The post discusses themes from the IpX ConX19 keynote on the importance of effective impact analysis in decision-making within organizations. It contrasts communication dynamics in small versus large companies, highlighting how siloed structures can hinder collaboration and lead to costly mistakes. The piece emphasizes the need for standardized communication tools to improve impact analysis quality.

HELP!!! Parts, Documents, Data & Revisions

The article discusses the ongoing debate about parts and revisions in PLM tools, stressing that parts should not have revisions while datasets associated with them should. It advocates for linking datasets and parts to enhance change agility, suggesting a model where parts lack revisions but datasets possess them for efficient management and impact analysis in engineering changes.
