What comes to mind when you think about Configuration Management?

On September 9, 2021, I conducted a full day of lectures on Configuration Management at Avans University, attracting over 30 students. The day included the creation of Word Clouds to gauge insights, discussions on key topics, and engaging exercises with LEGO bricks. The initiative has reached over 100 students, promoting awareness in Configuration Management.

On September 10, 2020, lectures on Configuration Management at Avans University highlighted the “Butterfly Effect,” where minor changes can lead to significant impacts in product development. The presenter emphasizes awareness and collaboration in managing changes effectively, urging professionals to enhance exposure to Configuration Management in educational settings for broader positive outcomes.

COVID-19 Impact on Configuration Management

The COVID-19 Impact on Configuration Management Survey garnered 35 responses, revealing that about a third of organizations experienced disruptions in their Configuration Management processes. Most organizations were not paper-based and relied on automation. Change Management and Verification & Audit were the most affected areas, while some reported positive outcomes, particularly with enhanced electronic processes.

At the IpX ConX19 conference, Martin Haket and a co-author raised concerns about the need for cross-domain standards to enhance impact analysis, particularly between PLM and ERP systems. They argue that existing standards fail to address collaborative needs and advocate for a unified impact matrix to facilitate better decision-making in businesses across the supply chain.

CM is fun

Configuration Management (CM) is often misunderstood as tedious and bureaucratic. However, it plays a crucial role in business success by fostering communication and collaboration across departments. Those in CM possess valuable people skills that facilitate change, making the process rewarding and enjoyable. Continuous improvement in CM enhances efficiency and quality.
